Habitat Committees

Habitat for Humanity runs successfully in large part due to the volunteers who sit on the various committees. If you would like to be a member of any of the committees please contact our volunteer coordinator at volunteer@hfhwhatcom.org or 360-715-9170.  All new volunteers must attend an orientation prior to serving on a committee!

Board of Directors

The Board of Directors serves to provide legal and moral leadership and responsibility for all Habitat for Humanity Whatcom County (HFHWC) operations. Board members support the activities of operating committees, and are solely responsible for determining HFHWC policy in areas of Human Resources, Planning, Finance, Community Relations and Organizational Operations.

Family Selection

The Family Selection Committee works to carry out the board's vision by defining for the community the population in need of decent, affordable housing, and by developing processes and policies for selecting those in greatest need. Once the application process has been approved, this group will work with families who have applied, making sure that the applicant families meet the established criteria. The Family Selection Committee finds joy in making homeownership, a seemingly impossible dream for many applicant families, a reality.

Family Support

Habitat affiliates are committed to "the development and uplifting of families and communities, not only the construction of houses." Members of the Family Support Committee will work to establish tools and procedures for accomplishing this task. This committee works with families to be sure that the families know what is required in the area of sweat equity, and to help in the transition to true home-ownership. The Family Support Committee usually establishes and tracks the affiliate’s sweat equity policies, provides classes and other educational opportunities for families, and assists the family in making choices concerning the construction of their home. Many Family Support Committees provide a one on one volunteer to guide a selected family through the Habitat building process.

Site Selection

The Site Selection Committee works to define neighborhoods and communities where the affiliate should work and finds available land to build on in those areas. Tasks include working with city offices, neighborhood associations, and property owners. Those who like to dabble in real estate would be natural members! In some affiliates, the Site Selection Committee also works on land development issues.

Building Committee

The Building Committee works with the Site Selection Committee to define the type of construction that best fits the needs of the local community and Habitat's goals. The committee proposes guidelines to the Board for the type of construction work that the affiliate will do, dealing specifically with the house design criteria, materials, plans, energy-efficiency and cost estimates.

Faith Relations Committee

Habitat for Humanity and churches are natural partners - each seeking to serve God by serving those in need of simple, decent and affordable housing. Habitat for Humanity is an “active” cause, providing church communities a method to express their faith through actions. It is a mission focus that speaks to the part of us that likes action and wants to see results. A faith community can help build a home and watch a family move in. This committee will invite church communities to join with us as long-term partners in our home building ministry.
